AN ADDRESS OF WELCOME PRESENTED AT THE 6TH ASSOCIATION OF MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENTISTS OF NIGERIA (AMLSN) ANNUAL PUBLIC HEALTH LECTURE HOLDING TA’AL CONFERENCE HOTEL, LAFIA ON THE 22ND FEBRUARY, 2013 BY AMLSN, NASARAWA STATE BRANCH CHAIRMAN, ADAMU YAKUBU OHAGENYI.

PROTOCALS
I am indeed highly delighted and humbled to welcome you all to Lafia Bariberi the capital city of Nasarawa State, Home of Solid Minerals. Lafia has been known as centre of learning and your presence here to expound the knowledge of Blood Transfusion Science is not a coincidence. It is an acknowledgement of the serenity and favourable climate offered by Lafia for serious academic discuss.
The theme of this public health lecture‘’ Blood components therapy practice and production of blood components in Nigeria’’ is apt taking into cognizance of the haphazard way blood components transfusion is being handled in this country. Knowledge about the specific blood components to request for transfusion is inadequate resulting in request for whole blood when purified components could have done the magic. The technology to separate the blood into its components parts and preserve them is not made available to the Medical Laboratory professionals for them to put into practice what they learnt during their training. These requires a new thinking and new direction

As we settle down to be tutored on the art and science of blood component preparation and therapy I implore you all to listen attentively and imbibe the message for the redirection of blood transfusion service in the country.
Medical Laboratory Science is a continually evolving profession as it moves with the dynamic of science and has to keep pace with technological advancement. Our country can not afford to be the technological waste bins hence, the need to continually replace equipment and tools as technology evolve. The Medical Laboratory should be given the deserved attention in this replacement process.
The Nasarawa State government effort at improving the state of Medical Laboratories is well appreciated. A case in point is the construction of a new medical laboratory in General Hospital Awe.
May I use this opportunity to acknowledge the contribution of Pathfinder international through the influence of our Mother of the Day, Hajiya Maryam Buba for donating a solar operated Blood bank refrigerator to Dallhatu Araf Specialist Hospital Lafia. It is our desire that the state government would partner with Pathfinder international and any other organization for similar gesture to be extend to all general hospitals in the state.
I wish you all successful deliberations. It is our expectation that this lecture will reawaken us and give us a better perception of blood transfusion service. As we leave here better informed, we should re-commit ourselves to improving blood transfusion service and practice.
Your Excellencies, Distinguished Senators, Right Honourable members, Royal father(s), Guest Speakers, other distinguished guests and committed professionals, our Joy and gratitude knows no bound for making time out of your tight schedule to attend this function. You are all welcomed and we remain eternally grateful to you.
Thank you
